Sombi believes the construction industry is incredibly diverse and rapidly evolving. He often notes that there is something for everyone in the sector. From sustainable design and modern methods of construction (MMC) to LCA and building energy modelling, new and exciting career paths continue to emerge.

Take the time to explore different areas of the industry to discover what truly interests you.”

Interestingly, I came across the Work Ready Graduate Programme through a recommendation by one of UCD’s programme directors, who shared the opportunity on LinkedIn. I applied and went through two interviews—one with the Construct Innovate and another with D/RES Properties.

What stood out to me about D/RES Properties was their strong focus on sustainability. They’re actively working on ESG initiatives and integrating off-grid, microgrid solutions into their developments, which aligns closely with my interests. Their commitment to understanding the embodied carbon impacts of their mostly timber-frame projects really resonated with me. I already had some experience in quantifying embodied carbon, so it felt like the perfect fit.

My name is Sombi Stephen and I come from a background in architecture, urbanism, and climate action. I studied at University College Dublin (UCD), and have over four years of experience working as a technical trainer.

Over time, I developed a strong interest in sustainability, particularly in areas such as life cycle assessment (LCA), the circular economy, and sustainability certifications like the Home Performance Index (HPI). I’ve made it a personal goal to master key sustainability concepts so I can apply them effectively in the industry. My technical background, combined with a growing expertise in sustainable construction, has allowed me to contribute meaningfully to projects with a strong environmental focus.

I’ve been involved in several exciting projects. One of the first assignments I received was to help define the global warming potential (GWP) impact from a building perspective. I presented my findings, which led to my role in conducting life cycle assessments (LCAs) for several developments.

One major project was a large residential development in Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow, which includes apartments, duplexes, terraced, and semi-detached houses. I was tasked with assessing the embodied carbon of different housing typologies—specifically Estates 4 and 5. I analysed various construction technologies and their carbon impacts, gaining a deep understanding of the environmental footprint of our developments.

Additionally, I completed a course in the Home Performance Index (HPI) with the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC), and I’m now a certified assessor. I’m currently conducting HPI assessments for the same Newtownmountkennedy development, focusing on Estate 5.

Beyond that, I’ve been involved in evaluating mechanical systems to ensure they meet performance specifications. We’ve developed a checklist for our mechanical and electrical engineers to improve the quality and efficiency of our systems, which helps us provide the best possible housing for our clients.

“D/RES Properties has had an ongoing relationship with Construct Innovate since roughly 2023 when we attended the first AIMday event in Galway, which opened new doors of engagement between industry and academia. Closer ties were forged with Construct Innovate with our inclusion on technical adoption workgroups, followed in 2024 with two separate Construct Innovate Seed Funding grants into mass engineered timber construction.

When we were approached with an opportunity to assist with graduate placement via the Work Ready Graduate Progamme, it seemed a logical extension of our relationship with Construct Innovate. Almost one year on from taking on Sombi Stephen as a graduate in D/RES’ offices, it was clear he would be a good fit with his thirst for knowledge, his desire to make a difference, and a background in architecture and WLCA which has added to our in-house body of knowledge.

We believe that Sombi in turn has gained valuable insight and mentorship from D/RES with respect to his Post Graduate Diploma in Construction & Innovation and will thrive in his role as Sustainable Design Assistant once he resumes full employment with D/RES at the conclusion of his studies.”
