We are also working closely with Enterprise Ireland’s Built to Innovate initiative which provides a suite of lean, digitalisation and research and innovation grant aid packages. These packages are aimed at projects where the impact will result in homes that are built faster, on time and with less expense.

Current Seed Fund Call

Construct Innovate is delighted to announce its second Seed Fund call. The Seed Fund call aims to promote collaborative, impactful projects, initiated by industry, that can support organisations in the Irish construction sector with their organisational and sectoral challenges, and opportunities for innovation through research.

The Seed Fund is open to Construct Innovate members only and for projects up to €50,000.

Project: Developing an environmental, social and governance (ESG) methodology for construction industry

Project Aim

GLF Facades commits to deliver services and products to their clients in a sustainable manner and aims to communicate this through ESG reporting.
GLF Facades identified that there is a lack of detailed guidance available on how sustainability principles should be applied to the whole life cycle of a construction product therefore this project aims to develop a methodology roadmap for the Irish SMEs in the construction sector for identifying their Environmental Social and Governance priorities to address the current environmental challenges.
The methodology will help Irish companies to design their sustainability roadmaps and achieve decarbonisation targets for their operation, products, and services.
This is a 12-month project and will be carried out by the innovation researcher, academic PI who is Dr. Magdalena Hajdukiewicz in collaboration with GLF Façade.

Deliverables

The project will carry out a state-of-the-art review of the standards, guidelines and best practice in ESG aspects with a focus on the Irish construction industry.
It will then develop a methodology for identifying ESG priorities and create a sustainability roadmap in line with the UN SDG’s.
The methodology will be then demonstrated on the GLF Facades case study, including a Life Cycle Analysis and the development of the Environmental Product Declaration for the GLF ECO 90 Unitised Curtain Wall façade system where GLF Facades aims to work closely with EPD Ireland.
GLF Facades also engage with the industry and Construct Innovate working groups in the form of semi-structured interviews, industry workshops, conference publication, skills development and knowledge sharing.
The project aligns with the Sustainability and Collaboration pillars of Construct Innovate . The ESG pillars primarily address the UN SDG’s currently implemented in Ireland through the National Development Plan 2021-2030, National Implementation Plan for SDG’s 2022-2024, Climate Action Plan 2024 and National Energy & Climate Plan 2021-2030.

Project: Homegrown Homes 2024

Speaker: Des O’ Toole, Coilte

Project Aim

To demonstrate the effectiveness of utilising homegrown timber and wood-based panel products to showcase how a timber supply chain based on local forestry products can support the delivery of low carbon sustainable homes.
To quantify the benefits in terms of cost, speed, carbon footprint, quality and precision, waste, & the circular economy.

Deliverables

This will be the first large scale development of its kind in Ireland and a milestone for the Irish forest products sector as historically a very limited amount of local C16 structural grade sawn timber is specified by the timber frame sector for structural components.
Construction of a 25+ unit social housing development manufactured from homegrown timber and wood-based panel products.
Publication of a full carbon and LCA case study assessment of the development. Using the expertise of the University of Galway and the engineering know-how of the design team all real-time data, material quantities and EPDs will be gathered, assessed, and interrogated to ensure a comprehensive report is produced for broad dissemination across forestry, design and construction industries.
Implementation of a stakeholder engagement plan and a marketing and promotional campaign inclusive of press releases, trade publications, awards submissions, seminars and conference speaking opportunities to showcase the results and outcomes of the project and to further advance dialogue and understanding between the forest products and timber frame sectors.
