What advice would you give to students and graduates looking to enter the construction industry?

“To anyone considering the Work Ready Graduate Programme, I would highly recommend it. It’s a unique and valuable opportunity to step into the industry with the support of a structured programme that values both innovation and professional development.”

Baran Moradkhani is originally from Iran and has been living in Ireland for about three years. She completed her Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Shannon.

The Work Ready Programme has served as a fantastic bridge for her, transitioning from academia to industry. She was actively seeking an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment—particularly with a company that values innovation and embraces the integration of technology.

After interviewing with KOSMOS, Baran was thrilled to discover that the company was genuinely interested in adopting AI to enhance its operations. This alignment made it an ideal fit for her aspirations.

Through the Work Ready Graduate Programme, she had the opportunity to join Construct Innovate, which eventually led to her current placement at KOSMOS, a construction company based in Limerick. This placement has provided an exciting platform for Baran to bring her AI expertise into the construction sector and apply her knowledge in a practical, real-world setting.

During her studies, she gained a strong theoretical foundation in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis. While she completed several small projects at university, most of them relied on datasets sourced from the internet. However, once she joined KOSMOS, she began working with real-time, industry-specific data—a challenge of an entirely different scale.

Unlike academic datasets, the real-world data she encountered was often messy and unstructured. She had to tackle practical problems that delivered tangible outcomes. One of her initial projects involved automating the data cleaning process using AI. Baran developed a classification system to organize information—such as categorizing codes by location or type—which significantly improved the structure and quality of the data.

She is currently working on a risk assessment project. After cleaning and organizing the data, the next step is to use it for predictive analytics, including forecasting costs and carbon emissions. This ongoing work is allowing her to witness the real impact of AI in streamlining processes and supporting more informed decision-making within the construction industry.

“For us, it meant that we had somebody in the office who had a particular focus on the sustainability aspects of projects, both from, the practical and compliance side, but also from a theoretical level, and with a strong analytical, and ethical approach, which really kind of energised everybody here, in the Scott Tallon Walker Architects team in Galway. And, in fact, we had a whole new look at how we were doing projects in question. So that was the most helpful.”
